Mick Mulligan's Magnolia Jazz Band-Savoy Blues
Here's another for my "Archive of the 'New Orleans Revival' in the U.K.".
This track was kindly sent to me by Geoff D'Arcy after he saw my posting of Mick's version of "1919 Blues" -saying it was typical of the Magnolia Band in the 1950s.
Not the best sound quality, but worth 'archiving' none the less.
Many thanks, Geoff.

To a Wild Rose
Просмотров 2,2 тыс.11 лет назад
Okay; this is not my usual kind of music - but I have just found it again on an old cassette tape (from the days when I made long and boring car journeys) and realise that it is well worth hearing again! However, stay listening until the superb 'ride-out' at the end. It is, of course, Sonny Rollins playing "To a Wild Rose".
BBC Jazz Club, 1960

Here is a really classic clip from the BBC radio programme "Jazz Club" - broadcast on the 24th. March 1960. Introduced by Alan Dell, it includes two tracks by Mike Daniels' Delta Jazzmen and two by Jessie Fuller (who was on tour in the U.K. at the time). The first number by the band "Ponchatrain" gives the pianist, Des Bacon, a rare chance to show his mettle. The Jessie Fuller numbers (San Fran...

By special request (from "curtis2776") here's another gem from the original Temperance Seven, recorded in 1961. It is by their "Carnation Quartet" which comprised, on this track, Paul McDowell; vocal, -Colin Bowles; piano, -"Franklyn B. Paverty"; sousaphone and Alan Swainston Cooper on bass clarinet. (I couldn't resist adding their 'signature' fanfare track as it is one of the things I, and qui...

Here's another track recorded during the New York session on the 10th. March 1945 (kindly sent to me by Peter Meili), -a classic of its kind! The 'line-up' was :- Bunk Johnson; tpt. Sidney Bechet; clt. Sandy Williams; tmb. Cliff Jackson; pno. "Pops" Foster; bss. and Manzie Johnson dms. (Does anyone have a photo of Manzie Johnson please?)
Someday Sweetheart -New Iberia Stompers

After the interest shown in my first posting of this band, and a specific request, I thought it was time for another track from the same session (recorded on the 18th. November 1974, in "The 100 Club", Oxford Street, London). The 'line-up' on this track is:- Tony O'Sullivan; tpt. Dick Cook; clt. Mike Casimir; tmb. Chris Satterley; pno. Terry Wood; gtr. 1919 March -Mick Mulligan & Saints J.B.
Просмотров 6 тыс.12 лет назад
Here's another oddity saved on one of my early cassette tapes (just found it again -while looking for something else!). I thought it was worth posting because I can't find much on RUclips that records Mick Mulligan's contribution to the jazz scene in the U.K. Mick formed his first band in the late 1940's and continued until the early 1960's; but he is most remembered for his musical performance...
"Salty Dog" -Lizze Miles (Re-post)

A couple of years ago I posted an incomplete track I had saved, and asked for help in getting the full recording onto RUclips. Now that Alan Eichler has kindly provided the full track I can re-post this classic rendition made (in the early 1050's) when Lizzie sang with Sharkey Bonano and his Sharks of Rhythm. Many thanks, Alan!

Another "blast from the past" kindly provided by Mike Casimir. This track and the photographs are welcome additions to my little "archive of the N.O. Revival in the U.K." The New Iberia Stompers were popular in the U.K. and Europe from the mid 1960's onwards and played clubs, functions and jazz festivals in Germany, France, Holland, Belgium and (in 1973) New Orleans. The line-up on this track i...
The Paragon Brass Band -"It Feels So Good"

After seeing the popularity of my previous posting of this band, I thought it is time for another of their tracks recorded at their final performance in Holland. For full details of the band and line-up, see my posting of "Washington & Lee Swing". (Both of these tracks are posted with the kind approval of Neil J. Raybould of 'Raymer Sound')

Here is another posting that, certainly, belongs in my "RUclips archive" of U.K. bands that play, or played, in the New Orleans style following the great "N.O. Revival" of the 1940's/50's. This track and photographs were kindly provided by Mike Casimir -who formed the band, in the London area, around 1957. In the following years, they played in the U.K. and various European countries until they...

Posted 10th. March 2011, this is another tribute to Ken Colyer who died 23 years ago this month. It will never not be remarkable that Clive Dellino was born in 1929 according to the description. That means people born the same year as Anne Frank (and perhaps earlier than that) have made RUclips videos.

Baby Dodds! Hear the powerful Native American influence in his 4/4 dance beat on the bass drum (tuned like a tom). Baby Dodds was taught by Henry Zeno (who played with Buddy Bolden) and by Walter Brundy. I make award-winning documentary films on jazz; please watch JazzTown (AppleTV, Amazon Prime etc) and Who Killed Jazz (Vimeo), and much more on my youtube chan @BmakinFilm Big shout out to Danny Gottlieb for his drum ed contributions over the years and for his great playing w Pat Metheny.

Very nicely played, in the mainstream of that wonderful old genre of European, and particularly British (and Scandinavian), so called Traditional Jazz, which was our version of the New Orleans revival of the 1940s. Brings back all kinds of memories. I played this rag with my little combo playing school dances in the early 1960s in Helsingborg, Sweden. Thanks for posting this.

An absolutely great solo by Johnny Dodds that’s why in the British trad era didn’t try and copy him his was too refined and complicated George Lewis was far more easy saying that i still liked the George Lewis band perhaps it’s because my surname is Lewis.

My brother, John Smith played with Santo in the early 60s. Santo was a favorite of John, he said unlike other trombone players he played with regularly, Santo didn't try to play lots of notes fast, he just played the right notes.

What a superb, rollicking performance. I am far more attracted to so-called 'unpolished' performances than something practiced almost to perfection. It is the exhuberant energy and devil-may-care attitude that makes this band so much fun.

When I first herd this on a Collection at Arkansas Musical trends 1970's the Mouth Music was what fascinated me, None of recordings by John Carson, the Skillet Lickers and Pope's Arkansas Mountaineers present Mouth Music as does Carter Brothers, as here, whitch puts The Carter Bro's of Much More Greater Value over boring ass John Carson, the Skillet Lickers and Pope's Arkansas Mountaineers. Oh year them are Great Musicianers however haint got no Mouth Mumbler's as it was known up to Boone Bounty Everton, Arkansas where I lived 1959 and herd the Tobacco Loafer hanging out by yhe Gourthouse in evening they would play Guitar's & Fiddles my Neighbour "Hoss S Jones" the Moonshiner who taught me to like Squil Soup and Guitar singing while His Feet's tatoo with which the music (as Vance Randolf callit) mountian one man band, my Grandmother was a friend ov Randolph and tooken me to meet hin in a Old Folks Home over to U.A. fayetteville later when w lived in Paris, Arkansas.
